Smriti has always been keenly interested in the craft and handloom industry of India, which gave her the chance to work with Fabindia as a textile designer. Her two years in Fabindia provided immense opportunities to travel and work with artisans across the country. This formed the basis of her understanding that design for craft is a lot more sensitive and the intricacies of the production chain in this sector a lot more complicated than the organized mill sectors. She has designed various ranges of home linen and garment fabrics using techniques from around the country, which can be seen at the Fabindia stores all over the world.

Smriti has also worked exhaustively with NGO's like SEWA and other bodies like DAH and UNIDO as a textile designer and consultant to develop craft clusters like Chanderi, Kota, and Murshidabad etc.

She regularly conducts workshops on textile design; production, costing, marketing and quality control of craft based products for the artisans in the concerned sectors and holds discussions on the problems that are faced by them.
